The creation of yarn pom poms have a special place in crafting both for the diversity of their potential uses and the ease in which they can be made. While there are special tools sold commercially designed to make pom poms in a uniform size and shape nearly every time, these are largely overrated as most experienced in making crafts opt to create pom poms "old-school" using nothing more than the yarn of choice and a pair of scissors. While this may sound a bit intimidating to someone that has never attempted to make pom poms in this fashion it is really quite simple, and with a short amount of practice the results can be magnificent.
The first step to make yarn pom poms is to gather the colors of yarn in the desired thickness along with a pair or scissors possessing reasonably long blades and rounded ends if possible. The basic idea to make yarn pom poms is to wind yarn around your fingers to make a small ball of yarn with a hollow center. The more fingers and yarn that is wrapped around them the larger the finished pom pom will become. To make a multi-colored pom pom simply use several different colors of yarn in equal amounts.
Cut a single length of yarn to around twelve inches and set it aside within reach. Begin to make your yarn pom pom by wrapping the yarn around your flattened fingers about 1/2 inch from your fingertips and working your way toward your hand. When about 1/2 inch from your hand reverse the direction, going back and forth until the yarn used is at least 3/4 of an inch thick in the center. Grasp the twelve inch piece of yarn previously cut and place one end between your finger tips and the other end through the space between the fingers near your hand, making certain that equal lengths are left dangling. Next, take the two loose ends with the fingers of your free hand and tie them into a knot. Remove the yarn pom pom from your fingers and pull the knot ends tightly to secure the pom pom, trimming the excess yarn remaining from the knot.
The final steps to make yarn pom poms begins with placing your scissors between the yarn loops on both sides of the center knot and cutting the yarn so that the former loops now become free ends of yarn. Place your pom pom on a table with the binding knot facing down and press to flatten the pom pom using the palm of your hand. The remaining task to complete your yarn pom pom is to use your scissors to shape the pom pom into the shape of a ball, and your pom pom is now ready to use in the craft project of your choice.
